Vaping and Health: What Health-Conscious Adults Should Know

A vape should not be marketed as a “health-conscious” lifestyle product. Vaping involves inhaling an aerosol into the lungs, and current evidence does not support describing an IGET disposable or another consumer vape as healthy, harmless or beneficial for general wellbeing.

If you do not smoke, there is no health reason to start vaping

For adults who do not currently smoke or vape, starting to use a disposable vape introduces exposure without a health benefit. Product features such as a mesh coil, compact design or a large puff rating describe the hardware; they do not turn the product into a wellness device.

If you smoke and are considering quitting

The decision is different for someone who already smokes and is trying to stop. That is a health-treatment question rather than an ordinary shopping decision. The Australian Government recommends discussing quit options with a doctor, pharmacist or other qualified health professional. Its vaping and quitting guidance describes established strength-replacement and prescription options and the circumstances in which therapeutic vapes may be considered.

Understand what Australian regulation does—and does not—mean

Australia regulates lawful vaping supply through a therapeutic pharmacy framework. The TGA notes that therapeutic vaping goods are unapproved therapeutic goods, meaning they are not included in the ARTG and have not been evaluated by the TGA for safety, quality, efficacy or performance. Regulatory availability therefore should not be interpreted as a blanket safety endorsement.

Better questions for a health-conscious user

  • Am I using vaping as part of a defined plan to stop smoking, or simply adding another exposure?
  • Have I discussed evidence-based quit options with a health professional?
  • Do I understand the current Australian access rules?
  • Am I relying on product marketing for health conclusions that require clinical evidence?
  • Do I have a plan to stop vaping as well as smoking?

Bottom line

Health-conscious decision-making means being sceptical of wellness-style claims. Vaping is not risk-free, and a product should be evaluated separately from medical advice. Use current government guidance for health decisions rather than relying on a brand’s popularity or retail description.
